Newcomers in the Trades programs are offered by the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region, to assist newcomers to Canada access careers in Ontario's skilled trades.
The YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region has been delivering quality orientation, language assessment and employment programming for newcomers and immigrants since 1993, and is thrilled deliver "Newcomers in the Trades Services" through funding from the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada, the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development, and United Way.
Services
Pre-Apprenticeship Home Renovation Program
Pre-apprenticeship Training Program in Carpentry, Drywall Finishing, and Plastering,
Tile and Marble Setting
We offer:
24 Weeks of Free Training
8 to 12 Weeks of Paid Work Placement
Technical, Academic, and Pre-Employment Preparation
Free Textbooks, Toolkits, and Safety Equipment
To participate, you must be:
At least 16 years of age and born outside of Canada
Interested in working in The Home Renovation Sector
Resident of Ontario, legally entitled to study and work in Canada
Available to attend classes on a full-time basis for 24 weeks
Prepared to start full-time placement or employment
At Canadian Language Benchmark Level 5 in English or higher
Power of Trades
Power of Trades offers pre-employment training and support for immigrants who want to work in the skilled trades. All services are offered at no cost to participants.
The program includes:
Six weeks of in-class, non-technical training
Orientation to skilled trades and apprenticeships
Access to in-demand certification (WHMIS, Service Excellence, etc.)
Work towards earning your Ontario Secondary School Diploma
Three-week work placement in your trade following your training
Ongoing individualized job search support
Individualized Consultation (ongoing)
Specialized one-on-one employment consultation for job seekers
Available by referral to any client of employment or settlement services in Ottawa-Gatineau
Multilingual staff
Services for Employers (ongoing)
Help with staffing needs
Access to job fairs and customized hiring sessions
Access to a large pool of pre-screened candidates of all skill levels in all four trade sectors
No-risk co-op placements with pre-screened mature learners
Build ON Pre-arrival Services
Build ON is a pre-arrival service funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. We provide specialized information and orientation about the Skilled Trades to new immigrants approved to immigrate to Ontario, Canada. Click here to learn WHAT WE DO
