Specialty Beams is a Custom Beam Mill, Planing Facility and Frame Shop, exclusively using Premium Grade One and Structural Select Douglas fir! We have been in business for about 35 years having done Jobs for Disney World to ZZ-Top! We use a 5 foot Circle Saw for extreme precision and accuracy. A 42 foot beam cut by our Saw Mill won't be off by more than 1/16" from one end to the other, and will be truly square. Unlike a Band Saw which could be off by 1-2" or more and produces a wavy beam which isn't truly square. Our Circle Saw also leaves a unique and distinctive rustic kerf pattern which is highly sought after as there are very few Mills which still use one. The reason for this is the waste. Our Circle Saw Blade throws 3/8" to sawdust with each pass, a Band Saw throws about 1mm to sawdust saving the Saw Mill on waste. But the payback for us is that we produce a "Superior Precision Quality Beam"!
Doug fir is rated stronger in weight bearing capacity than Northern Red Oak. Doug fir also has a gorgeous red heart and a unique tight Grain pattern which gives it a superior beauty and strength. Last year we brought in approx. 500,000 BF of Coastal Doug fir which is debarked and decked to Naturally Cure and dry on the Sort Yard in Longview Washington. This is the Jap Sort which is very clear and defect free (Little to no Pitch Seams/Pockets/Rings, Spiral Grain etc) and with minimal Knots. It is true Grade One and Structural Select and can be Certified and Stamped for Structural Integrity. We also used about 500,000 BF of Select, Premium inland Doug fir which has tighter growth ring patterns, but is known for having a few more defects. It's simple, "We use the best to produce the best"!
We are able to cut a beam 24X24" and up to 42' long. We also can produce Free Of Heart Center (FOHC) up to 8X24" also up to 42' long. Our Planing Facility can produce S4S Beams up to 14"X24" also 42' long. We also offer Hand Hewn, Axe Hewn, Wire Brushed Surface Texturing and Hollowed out Faux Beams as well.
We have a State-Of-The-Art Frame Shop with 3 full time World Class Framers. We produce Arched Beams, a variety of Unique Custom Trusses, Knee Braces and Corbels in our Shop which are all custom made in Montana to our customers specifications.
