Sustainability
Sustainability is a way of life for our company. While we sincerely strive for sustainable actions as a matter of what is right, Lafarge understands that in order to be successful - we must be financially sustainable. Therefore, it makes business sense to do what is right. We know that we have more to do to continue to improve our environmental performance but we are proud of the steps we are taking every day. We are always seeking ways to increase our performance at our operations but beyond that we work to develop innovative solutions that can help design professionals achieve sustainable design.
Cornerstone Standards Council
The Cornerstone Standards Council (CSC) is a not-for-profit organization in Ontario governed by a multi-stakeholder Board of Directors with balanced representation from industry and non-industry interests, as well as expertise in sustainable product certification.
They are a ground-breaking collaboration of community, environmental and industry stakeholders committed to developing a world-class voluntary certification program. Ontario’s growing infrastructure needs, and increasing pressure on land use, has led to growing public concern over the impact of aggregates on our communities and the environment. CSC’s Responsible Aggregate Standard is the world's only voluntary certification system for responsible aggregate practices.
The Standard provides for enhanced public engagement, progressive and efficient rehabilitation, protection and enhancement of environmentally significant areas and improved operational practices that exceed current regulatory requirements while highlighting a company’s sustainability procedures such as LafargeHolcim’s Sustainability 2030 Ambitions.
“As part of Lafarge’s commitment to sustainability and economic growth, we envision an aggregates industry that develops and uses materials in a way that respects our communities and environmental concerns. We believe that having the CSC certification will help us achieve this goal. The certification ensures both our public and private customers that the material that they are investing in is responsibly sourced with minimal to no adverse effects to the community or environment.
The Lafarge – Oro site is the first Lafarge site to receive this certification. Lafarge takes great pride in having received this certification from Cornerstone Standards Council, and on a personal level I am extremely proud that we have accomplished this as a company and been recognized for it. In the future, Lafarge strongly believes in staying committed to such efforts and hoping to get more sites certified in order to stay sustainable in the community.”
